Module Two Description:
Module Two for Grade Nine English at Select Academy covers Units 6 through 10, focusing on critical societal themes and practical language skills. Through engaging in varied listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities, students will develop comprehension, analytical, and expressive skills, while exploring issues such as poverty, community service, communicable diseases, fairness, equity, and the role of technology. Each unit encourages students to communicate effectively in English, broaden their vocabulary, and apply grammatical structures in context. Students will also explore how to construct coherent paragraphs and essays, enhancing their ability to articulate ideas on real-world issues both in spoken and written English.
Module Two Learning Outcomes:
By the end of Module Two, students will be able to:
- Comprehend and interpret medium-level spoken and written texts on diverse topics, transferring key information effectively.
- Engage in conversational English with grammatical accuracy in various contexts.
- Apply context clues to infer meanings of unfamiliar words, enhancing vocabulary with phrasal verbs and suffixes.
- Write descriptive and expository essays on topics like poverty, community service, health, social equity, and technology, with coherent structure and relevant content.
- Utilize specific grammatical structures, such as modal verbs, relative clauses, the present perfect and continuous tenses, conditional sentences, and contrasts between past and present tenses.
- Analyze and discuss the impact of social issues such as poverty, community service, communicable diseases, and the importance of technology, promoting a deeper understanding of societal roles and responsibilities.
- Integrate ideas from reading passages into discussions and written assignments, fostering critical thinking and practical application of knowledge.
Module Activities:
To achieve the above outcomes, Module Two will include the following activities:
Listening Activities:
- Listening Comprehension Exercises: Listen to audio clips on poverty, community services, health, equity, and technology, followed by comprehension questions to assess understanding and encourage critical thinking.
- Note-Taking Practice: Students will practice extracting key points from spoken texts, which will help in summarizing and transferring information accurately.
Speaking and Conversation Activities:
- Group Discussions: Students will discuss topics such as poverty alleviation, the role of community service, and the effects of communicable diseases. This encourages active participation, vocabulary usage, and grammatical accuracy.
- Role-Playing: Simulate real-life situations where students discuss social and technological topics, using target grammar structures such as modals, relative clauses, and conditionals.
- Debates on Social Issues: Hold debates on fairness, equity, and the societal role of technology to build speaking confidence and persuasive language skills.
Vocabulary and Grammar Activities:
- Context Clue Exercises: In reading passages, students will identify new words and infer their meanings using context clues.
- Phrasal Verbs Practice: Activities focused on understanding and using phrasal verbs related to each unit’s topic, such as ‘break down,’ ‘stand up for,’ or ‘log in.’

MODULE ASSESSMENT METHOD
REQUIRED TEXTBOOK AND MATERIALS
Module two of English Grade 9 will employ various assessment methods to evaluate student progress. These include listening comprehension tests, note-taking and summarization tasks, and oral presentations to assess speaking skills. Reading comprehension tests, skimming and scanning exercises, and vocabulary quizzes will evaluate reading abilities. Writing assessments will consist of narrative and expository essays, process descriptions, and grammar quizzes. Additionally, pronunciation tests and vocabulary exercises will ensure proficiency in pronunciation and vocabulary usage. These methods provide a comprehensive evaluation of students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. There are also mid-term exam and final exam.
