Lesson 5: Writing
Revision: Interpreting Graphs
Graph Analysis and Evaluation
- Identify the Graph Elements:
- Title: What is the graph about?
- X-Axis: What categories or types of traditional medicines are shown?
- Y-Axis: What is being measured (e.g., the number of users, frequency of use)?
- Bars: Compare the length or height of the bars to determine the quantity.
- Describe Trends and Changes:
- Highest and Lowest Values: Identify which traditional medicine was used the most and which was used the least.
- Overall Trend: Note whether the usage of traditional medicines generally increased, decreased, or fluctuated.
- Use Vocabulary for Analysis:
- Increase/Rise/Grow/Climb: “The number of users for [Medicine A] has increased over the past year, climbing steadily from [X] to [Y].”
- Decrease/Drop/Fall/Decline: “Conversely, the usage of [Medicine B] has decreased sharply, dropping from [X] to [Y].”
- Fluctuate/Stability: “The use of [Medicine C] fluctuated throughout the period, with no clear trend towards increase or decrease.”
- Gently/Gradually/Slightly/Steadily: “The rise in the use of [Medicine D] was gradual, showing a steady increase of about [X]% each quarter.”
- Suddenly/Sharply/Dramatically: “There was a sudden increase in the use of [Medicine E] in the last month, with a dramatic rise of [X]%.
Example Analysis Based on Hypothetical Graph:
Description: The bar graph illustrates the usage rates of five different traditional medicines over a year.
- Medicine Usage Summary:
- Most Used Medicine: [Medicine A] – This medicine was used the most, with a steady rise in usage from 50 users in January to 200 users in December. The graph shows a clear and consistent increase.
- Least Used Medicine: [Medicine B] – This medicine had the lowest usage, with a decline from 150 users to 30 users over the same period. The graph demonstrates a sharp fall in its usage.
- Trend Analysis:
- The usage of [Medicine A] grew steadily throughout the year, showing a gradual increase. This steady climb indicates a growing popularity or possibly improved accessibility or efficacy of the medicine.
- In contrast, [Medicine B] experienced a dramatic decrease, with a sudden drop in the last quarter of the year. This sharp decline could be attributed to factors such as reduced demand, availability issues, or new competing products.
- Fluctuations and Stability:
- [Medicine C] displayed fluctuating usage, with periods of increase followed by declines, indicating that its popularity might be influenced by seasonal factors or varying effectiveness.
- [Medicine D] showed a slight but steady increase over the year, suggesting a gradual rise in acceptance or use.
Group Discussion Phrases:
- “As we can see from the graph, [Medicine A] is clearly the most popular, with usage rising steadily over the months. This steady climb suggests that it has been consistently effective or in demand.”
- “On the other hand, [Medicine B] experienced a significant drop, especially towards the end of the year. The sharp fall indicates a possible shift in preference or issues with the medicine.”
- “The fluctuations in [Medicine C]’s usage could be attributed to varying factors such as seasonality or promotional campaigns.”
- “The gradual increase in [Medicine D]’s usage highlights a steady rise in its acceptance, even though the change is slight.”
Using this approach will help you communicate the trends and insights effectively in your discussion.
