Dear Learner!
We, at Select Academy, welcome you very warmly to the Grade 9 English language course. This course is prepared based on the new Ethiopia’s English language curriculum which was developed in 2022. We believe that the course serves two purposes. Firstly, it will help you improve your overall English language proficiency and skills. Secondly the course will significantly support you to do the other subjects smoothly as English is the medium of instruction in secondary schools.
The course is organized based on the four major skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and the other two sub-skills (vocabulary and grammar). Therefore, every unit begins with a listening lesson followed by speaking skills. Then, reading skill is taught along with vocabulary. Grammar is taught as a separate skill. The unit ends with a writing lesson.
This English language course is divided into two modules. Each module has five units. Accordingly, Module One covers such topics as “Living in Urban areas, Study skills, Traffic Accident, National parks and Horticulture” Similarly, Module Two includes five topics under each unit: “Poverty in Ethiopia, Community services, Communicable diseases, Fairness and Equity and The Internet”.

To successfully complete this course, you are required to study each lesson. There are 5 lessons in each unit. The lessons have a length ranging from 15-20 minutes. We strongly believe that you can maximize your participation, the course includes reading comprehension, in text questions, learning activities, summaries and well prepared tests for self-check exercises.

- Use a wide range of language items (grammar items) in different settings.
- Write:

- informal letters

- descriptive essay
Module 1
Introduction
This module the second section of grade nine course having five units on the topics Accordingly, Module One covers topics as “Living in Urban areas and Rural Areas, Study skills, Traffic Accident, National Parks and Horticulture” The module helps how leaners can improve their language in the learning and teaching environment, communicate well in their daily life and routines and for their academic competence using the contents.

This Module is composed of five units designed to provide the learner with the opportunity to acquire knowledge, understand, and use the language for academic and educational purposes throughout their educational journey in various English-taught courses and subjects. The first course book description includes five units, each divided into six distinct sections: Listening Skills, Reading Skills, Vocabulary, Grammar, Speaking Skills, and Writing Skills, all organized and labeled intentionally.
The Listening Skills section addresses national and international issues such as urban life, rural life, road accidents, and parks, helping students analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and interpret the information they hear. Vocabulary development is integrated to extend ideas in listening, speaking, and writing activities. The Reading Skills section features passages relevant to student life, requiring students to comprehend the readings and engage deeply with the author’s ideas. Vocabulary and grammar are derived from the reading and listening activities, promoting interactive speech and enhancing writing skills. Overall, the learner gains appropriate study skills and applies them to learning English effectively.
The student gets the opportunity to engage learning with various approaches: lecture and attending both the audio and video and written lessons.
Assignments and Grading system:
Assignment 1: Individual work
Part A: The students will do all those exercises written at each and every unit of the listening, speaking, reading, and writing of the five units.
Assignment 2: Mid Term Exam and Final Exam
The students will do a middle exam that include questions from the first half of the course book or text book, and a final exam that includes questions from the whole course book. All the activities and exercises and notes those found in the text book are the primary materials for the exam.
Grading:
Mid Exam 40% of the grade
Final Exam 60% of the grade
Course book policy: When the student or Learner successfully completing the course, and the units in the virtual program the student needs to be participating and learning the lesson at least 90% of virtual class time, and complete all the assignments with an acceptable grade
