These verbs are called modal verbs that have different meanings in different contexts. For instance, the word shall can be used to express willingness, and suggestions in different contexts. Note the following examples to learn about the meanings of the different modal verbs.
Look at the following sentences and the role of modal verbs in the given expression.
- You can speak English since you learnt the language to utter words.(ability)
- I could start writing my name in English when I was a grade one student.(Past ability)
3.You ought to apologize to her. Ought you apologize to her? (advice)
4.You ought to go now before it rains. Ought you to go before it rains?(necessity)
