Phrasal Verb | Meaning | Example |
act out | perform something with actions and gestures | The students acted out the story on stage. |
act on | to take action because of something like information received | The police were acting on a tip from an informer and caught the thief. |
act up | behave badly or strangely | The printer is acting up again, so I can’t print my report. |
add on | Include | They decided to add on an extra bedroom to the house. |
add up | to make a mathematical total | All the small expenses add up quickly if you’re not careful. |
aim at | to target | This campaign is aimed at raising awareness about climate change. |
allow for | include something in a plan or calculation | When planning your trip, allow for delays at the airport. |
allow of | make possible, permit | The tight schedule does not allow of any changes. |
back away | retreat or go backwards | He backed away from the project when it became too complicated. |
back down | retract or withdraw your position or proposal in an argument | She refused to back down during the negotiation. |
back up | make a copy of computer data | Make sure to back up your files regularly. |
