Lesson 9: Summary
Ethiopia boasts a rich linguistic diversity, approximately 85 languages spoken in Ethiopia. Ethiopia is the only country in Africa to have its own written alphabet, the Ethiopic script. The peoples of Africa in general speak languages that belong to four super-families or proto-languages namely Afro-Asiatic, Nilo-Saharan, Niger-Congo and Khoisan. Among these, Afro-Asiatic is particularly prominent, encompassing the Cushitic, Semitic, and Omotic branches. Omotic languages are spoken in southern and southwestern Ethiopia. Additionally, Nilo-Saharan languages are concentrated in Ethiopia’s Benishangul-Gumuz and Gambella regions. This diverse linguistic landscape reflects Ethiopia’s cultural heritage and regional diversity, contributing significantly to its unique identity within Africa.
