Lesson 25: Summary
Africa boasts unparalleled linguistic diversity with between 1,000 and 2,000 languages spoken as first languages, encompassing about one-third of the world’s total. Nigeria alone hosts around 500 languages, solidifying its position as one of the most linguistically diverse nations globally. These languages are primarily categorized into four main families: Niger-Congo, Afro-Asiatic, Nilo-Saharan, and Khoisan, which together cover the majority of native African languages. The Niger-Congo family, the largest in Africa, includes prominent languages like Swahili, spoken by millions across East Africa, and numerous Bantu languages widespread in southern Africa. Afro-Asiatic languages, dominated by Arabic with over 150 million speakers, are prominent in northern Africa, while Nilo-Saharan languages span central and eastern Africa. The Khoisan languages, found in southern Africa, add further complexity to Africa’s linguistic tapestry, highlighting the continent’s rich cultural heritage and structured linguistic diversity.
