Lesson 17: Summary
The Shewan dynasty, founded by Negasi Kirstos in the late 17th century, initially centered in Ayne but expanded under his successors. Abiye (1718-1745) moved the capital to Doqaqit, and Meridazmach Amhayesus (1745-1775) established Ankober as the new political center. During the Zemene Mesafint, Shewa remained independent from the era’s civil wars. Asfawossen (1775-1808) expanded the kingdom and improved administration, while his successor Wossenseged (1808-1813) focused on internal consolidation and diplomacy. Sahle Selassie (1813-1847) elevated Shewa to its peak by expanding its territory, modernizing with European assistance, and enhancing trade. His reign saw Shewa’s greatest autonomy and stability until his death, after which his son Haile Melekot took over.
